FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Club

Congratulations Panther Power Robotics Team 2513 on taking 2nd Place at States for Presentation on Dec. 10, 2011!

This Award is given to a Team for the clarity of their presentation, information given, the creativity in presentation and their amount of sharing the presentation before competition.   Also, congratulations to the Team (and parents) who came in 1ST place for the Food Drive.   Congratulations to this year's State Mentor of the Year...our own Dr. Gail Seelig. The Team nominated Dr. Gail as Mentor of the Year. Their kind words regarding Dr. Gail, won her this much deserved award.

Once again, thank you parents for your time and commitment towards our Team. Without you, we would not have made it to where we are today.

Can FIRST ® LEGO®

League Teams Improve Our Food?

In the 2011 Food Factor Challenge, over 200,000 9-16 year olds from over 55 countries will explore the topic of food safety and examine the possible points of contamination our food encounters – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage – then find ways to prevent or combat these.

The Academy's Panther Power Robotics Team 2513 is up for the challenge and looking forward to another exciting and fun season. Please check Mrs. Tyler's schoolnotes robotics page for more details about the team and the latest challenge.

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace Robotics Wins State Title!!

On Saturday, December 11, 2010, the Academy’s First Lego League Robotics teams attended the State meet at Mount Olive High School. There, they competed against the top 48 teams in the state. The morning was spent behind closed doors in judging rooms. They were critiqued on teamwork skills, robot design and performance and a presentation of their research project. The theme for this year is Biomedical Engineering.

Our Veteran Team, Panther Power Blue, team number 3554, studied and researched the heart, blood clots and Mitral Valve Prolapse. The rookie team, Panther Power White, Team 10494 took on the ribs. Both teams did an amazing job! Panther Power White won first place in the "Project and Research Award." Their "Innovative Solution" was a Carbon Fiber Shirt to protect ribs from injury. The judges look for teams whose quality research, innovative solutions, efforts sharing with the community and creative presentation best reflect an in-depth understanding of the various scientific disciplines and issues involved with the Project. They also look for the team’s ability to have as many team members as possible participate in the presentation.

Our Teams both won First and Second Place in the Food Drive Competition.

At the Regional Competition in November, Panther Power Blue won First Place for Research and Project Presentation while Panther Power White brought home the Judge’s Award. Both Teams were invited to the State Competition for their award winning Presentations. Lastly, eighth grader, Michael N. received the "Student Mentor Award." Michael’s unique efforts to help our rookie team with programming and his positive leadership qualities follow into the FLL’s Core Values.

The Academy Robotics continues to seek out professional mentors and sponsors. If you are interested in learning more about the FLL or how you can help, please contact Alys Tyler at atyler@theacademyolp.org

CONGRATULATIONS PANTHER POWER!  GREAT JOB!

With two successful years under our belts, the Panther Power Robotics Club has expanded to two Teams. The theme for 2010 is “The Body Forward Challenge.”  The FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams will explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.

Each FLL Challenge has two parts – the Robot Game and the Project. Teams need to attempt both in order to be eligible for awards at tournaments.

Teams 3554 and 10494 are also looking for Sponsorship both in monetary donations and the help of professionals. Students have begun researching areas of Biomedical Engineering and are currently seeking out “Experts” in the field to give us more knowledge on their areas of expertise.

We hope to compete at the Montclair Regional on November 20th , 2010.  Teams that win in Presentation, Teamwork or Robot Performance will move on to States Competition in Mount Olive on December 11th , 2010.

For more information regarding FIRST or the FLL go to http://www.usfirst.org .  If you are interested in any form of sponsorship or mentoring our teams, please contact

Mrs. Alys Tyler at atyler@theacademyolp.org .

The Teamwork Award is defined as:  Teamwork is critical to succeed in FLL and it is the key ingredient in any team’s success. This award is presented to the team whose members best demonstrate extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, the utmost respect for their own teammates, and support and encouragement of fellow teams. They demonstrate confidence, energy, strong problem solving skills, and great group dynamics.

Team advisors are Mrs. Alys Tyler, Melinda Carney, and Kathleen Nitzsche. They are also aided by parent volunteers. We are also in search of community sponsorship in various capacities including monetary donations, the donation of additional "Mindstorm" Robots and rechargeable robot batteries, engineering and computer professionals that understand the application and functions of Mindstorm technology and have an interest to mentor children.

For more information regarding the team or how you could help, please contact Alys Tyler at atyler@theacademyolp.org.
