Halloween Bags for Our
Soldiers
By Academy of Our Lady of Peace
10/27/2009
Middle school students at The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School in New
Providence collected candy and assembled gift bags for our soldiers in Iraq.
With one amazing effort, Academy students managed to collect enough candy to
fill 800 goodie bags. The Academy students also expressed their gratitude to
our troops and sent prayers for their safety along with the Halloween
treats.
Many thanks to Academy math teacher, Mr. Meehan, who delivered the bags
to The 304th Civil Affairs Brigade in Philadelphia for delivery overseas,
and Ms. Diane Wachter, 304th Civil Affairs Family Readiness Coordinator, who
arranged to deliver the candy to our soldiers free of charge.

Breakfast
Food Drive
Mrs. Frith's
religion classes are collecting breakfast items from our school community
during the month of February 2009. Any kind of non-perishable breakfast
items such as: coffee, tea, powdered milk, powdered pancake, biscuit, waffle
and bread mixes, jams and powdered eggs would be greatly appreciated. Please
drop them off in the box outside Mrs. Frith's room.
Winter
Clothing Drive
Winter Clothing Drive - Part
One has the 5th graders collecting new socks, scarves, hats, gloves and mittens and it
will run through the months of November and December. Items should be new
and left in the homerooms.
Middle school
students will also be
collecting gently used coats, sweaters and sweat pants [snow boots are OK]
and this will be running parallel to the other clothing drive. Drop them off
in your homeroom and our students will gladly find homes for them!
Food Drive
In addition to
the clothing drives above, our students are also collecting various food
items. Candied yams, cranberry sauce, and mac n' cheese donations can be
placed in the box outside the school office until Wednesday, November 25th.
We can all spare a can or two! Please help.
Horizon School Outreach
Our students
in Grade 8 have partnered with the Horizon School in Livingston for many
years. Horizon School and Horizon High School serve more than 150 students
ages 3-21 with multiple disabilities. Our students spend several First
Fridays and other half days working with these students on projects and
enjoying the holidays as well. In many ways it is our Academy students that
come away transformed and inspired from this worthwhile experience.
Many of
the Horizon students come from needy families and at Christmas time, our
very generous families participate in the Christmas in a Box program to
purchase holiday gifts for these students and their families. It is truly a
wonderful way to remember the true meaning of Christmas and that, as Jesus
taught us, we are called to help and love our fellow man.
Halloween Bags for Our
Soldiers
Mrs. Frith's Religion classes participated in a service project to
sweeten the Halloween Holiday for our soldiers stationed in Iraq. The
students brought in a variety of candy and together the packaged over 500
goody bags to be sent overseas. Each goody bag included an inspirational
message written by our students.
The candy bags
actually arrived in Iraq on Halloween just in time for the soldiers to enjoy
the holiday away from home. We even received two pictures from Iraq showing
the joy on the soldiers' faces with the goody bags in their hands. God bless
them all!
