The Academy of Our
Lady of Peace Robotics Wins State Title
On Saturday,
December 11, the Academy’s First Lego League Robotics teams attended the
State meet at Mount Olive High School. There, they competed against the top
48 teams in the state. The morning was spent behind closed doors in judging
rooms. They were critiqued on teamwork skills, robot design and performance
and a presentation of their research project. The theme for this year is
Biomedical Engineering.
Our Veteran Team,
Panther Power Blue, team number 3554, studied and researched the heart,
blood clots and Mitral Valve Prolapse. The rookie team, Panther Power White,
Team 10494 took on the ribs. Both teams did an amazing job! Panther Power
White won first place in the "Project and Research Award." Their "Innovative
Solution" was a Carbon Fiber Shirt to protect ribs from injury. The judges
look for teams whose quality research, innovative solutions, efforts sharing
with the community and creative presentation best reflect an in-depth
understanding of the various scientific disciplines and issues involved with
the Project. They also look for the team’s ability to have as many team
members as possible participate in the presentation.
Our Teams both won
First and Second Place in the Food Drive Competition.
At the Regional
Competition in November, Panther Power Blue won First Place for Research and
Project Presentation while Panther Power White brought home the Judge’s
Award. Both Teams were invited to the State Competition for their award
winning Presentations. Lastly, eighth grader, Michael N. received the
"Student Mentor Award." Michael’s unique efforts to help our rookie team
with programming and his positive leadership qualities follow into the FLL’s
Core Values.
The Academy
Robotics continues to seek out professional mentors and sponsors. If you are

The Academy
of Our Lady of Peace Science Fair Winner
5/29/2010

Dana Tokarzewski was named the overall winner of The Academy of Our Lady of
Peace Science Fair. For her project, Dana conducted an experiment to
determine how various baking ingredients work together to cause cupcake
batter to rise. Pairing her enthusiasm for baking with her keen interest in
culinary science, Dana tested various combinations of different flours and
leavening agents. Her understanding of the scientific principles involved
became evident to the panel of judges, as Dana discussed how both
temperature and the level of sugar present affect the production of carbon
dioxide, which causes the batter to rise. Her in-depth analysis and
professional explanation convinced the judges that she deserved the top
prize, overall winner of the 2010 Academy Science Fair. Congratulations,
Dana.

Robotics Team Wins Teamwork Award
2/6/2010

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School in New Providence proudly announces
that its First Lego League "FLL" Robotics team was awarded the prestigious
Teamwork Award at the Montclair Robotics Tournament. FLL Robotics is a
global robotics competition wherein each team must research and solve a
current, real-world issue. This year, the challenge was transportation
related. The Academy’s "Panther Power" team created an innovative solution
to helicopter safety issues by devising an ultrasonic proximity sensor to
help prevent collisions. The Panther Power team also assembled and
programmed its Mindstorm robot using complex software.
At the Montclair Qualifying Robotics Tournament on December 4th, Panther
Power competed against many teams from the region. They presented their
research and solutions to a panel of judges, who questioned them about their
research process, solution and teamwork. The Panther Power team also
competed in the "pits" where its robot diligently accomplished its required
tasks, earning the team’s highest score ever. Many fellow Academy students
and families cheered on the Panther Power team, in a show of school unity
and spirit.
The Panther Power team won the Teamwork Award which recognizes exceptional
partnership, strong problem solving skills and great group dynamics. They
were also among the top teams to qualify for the NJ State Championships on
December 12th, where Panther Power again earned strong scores and high
praise from the judges. Having also won the Project Award in 2008, its
rookie year, the Panther Power team is proud of its accomplishments and is
looking forward to next year’s competition which will focus on the
biomedical industry.

Students Adopt a Wolf at Lakota Wolf Preserve
1/30/2010

Students at The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School in New Providence,
recently adopted a wolf at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia, NJ. Academy
religious education teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Frith spearheaded the sponsoring
of this magnificent animal because it "provided both a great service
opportunity for the students…and a means to positively contribute to the
environment."
Mrs. Frith has long been dedicated to the preservation of these wolves and
introduced her students at AOLP to the Lakota Wolf Preserve. The Preserve is
home to arctic, timber and tundra wolves. Four packs of wolves, along with
bobcats and foxes, are raised in this natural environment by its dedicated
owners and volunteers. The Academy students toured the Preserve, observed
the wolves and learned about the packs’ social structure and eating habits.
The students were so enthralled by the beautiful animals, that they decided
to "adopt" or sponsor a wolf, providing for its feeding, medical needs and
general care.
Lead by the efforts of Mrs. Frith and the 7th grade class, AOLP students
embraced this unique service opportunity and celebrated AOLP Wolf Week. The
students donated their time, making unique wolf buttons and banners, which
were sold to family, friends and community supporters. The proceeds would be
used to sponsor a wolf chosen by the students. Wolf Week concluded with Wolf
Day where students showed support for their new furry friend, and voted to
adopt a young wolf named Orion. The students are thrilled to support and
follow the growth and development of Orion, and to expand their community
service work to include the Lakota Wolf Preserve.

Eighth grade students from The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School teamed up
with Operation Bling to bring comfort and care to cancer patients at local hospitals.
Bill and Chris Ferdinand, owners of Ferdinand Jewelers in New
Providence, recently launched "Operation Bling," a charitable organization which gives sparkling jewels to
cancer patients during their hospital stays. Operation Bling provides local hospitals with an assortment of
sterling silver and cubic zirconium jewelry, presented in a lovely case which includes a poem called "What
Cancer Cannot Do." This heartfelt gift provides patients with a few moments of joy during an otherwise difficult
time.
